Who's the Master (De)bator?
So what did Johnny, Great Sage and Emminent Political Junkie, have to say about the debates of last Thursday? Well, first off, they pissed me off because they moved The Apprentice to Wednesday and I almost missed it. Secondly, they pissed me off because the non-stop news coverage was like the coverage of the SuperBowl with every so-called "expert" from the campaign managers to the candidates' cousins' second grade teachers' dog trainer. Everyone had an opinion and they all had to make their little predictions. The best part was, in doing so, they pretty much had the debate without the candidates! (In some cases, they were actually more entertaining)
So what about the actual candidates and the actual debate? Well, it was a disappointment. Kerry, Master of Question Dodging, managed to avoid saying a single definitive thing the whole night that didn't contradict something he'd already emphatically stated. I think he set a new record for minimum time to contradict oneself when he managed to doubletalk himself into two positions on supporting the troops in the same damn sentence! There is no way in hell I'd vote for a man who's life goal seems to be how deep he can wedge a fence between his butt cheeks without taking on either side of it. How can you? He gets his positions from the weekly Gallup polls. When asked specifically about the plan he has for Iraq, he spent the next 2 minutes of his response time being as vague as humanly possible about the issue.
So, clearly, Dubya won, right? WRONG! The Democrats are right when they say he's dumber than the fencepost wedged up Kerry's rectum. He has no ability to articulate himself whatsoever. Kerry gave him more than ample opportunities to slam him on his lack of positions, lack of ethics, lack of commitment... the list goes on and on and on (quoting Zell Miller there, hehe). But Bush, Master of Eloquence that he is not, failed to take Kerry to the cleaners when he fucked up. Kerry started berating Bush about not adequately supporting the troops with armor and not adequately arming the personnel carriers, so naturally, this is the perfect opportunity for Bush to remind Kerry of his vote against the $87 billion which would have provided said equipment. Did he do it? No, and every Republican watching that debate must have wanted to slit their own wrists after listening to Dubya just let it slide. Hell, I never wanted a 12 blade more in my entire life!
So who won? Kerry. Bush let Kerry get away with too many comments that should have been thrown back in his face and let Kerry mislead the American people too much regarding his vision (vaguely described solely as "my vision") for America. Bush failed to convince the American people watching that he was a better candidate, that Kerry was not trustworthy, and that he was capable of the complex decisions demanded of a leader on a daily basis. Kerry is capable of leading, but for some reason, finds himself unable to say something without trying to weasel his way out of the definite stance later. He fails to understand that leadership, at times, requires one to make decisions that not everyone agrees with. You can't be best friends with everyone, and until he can understand that, he should not lead our country.
